We thought you might be interested in a tribute to the classic Jaguar Series One E-Type after one was sold at an auction specialist, Historics at Brooklands last month. Here’s its brief history and impact on the automotive community.
Launched in 1961 for today’s equivalent of around £40,000, the E-Type immediately made an impact around the globe. It was described by Enzo Ferrari as ‘the most beautiful car in the world’ and it wasn’t long before celebrities such as Brigitte Bardot, Steve McQueen and Britt Ekland were sporting the classic car as a fashion icon.
It’s hard to imagine the Jaguar E-Type’s impact when it was first produced seeing as the only cars that could match its top speed of 150mph would cost you at least twice as much. At one point in time it was even the fastest production car on the planet.
The Jaguar E-Type is known to need some TLC and maintaining if you’ve ever considered being the owner of one but the engines are very durable. It’s known that models have gone 100,000 miles without any major work while some of the older and original units have totalled up 300,000 miles and still been firing.
For the especially brave and pursuing of us, the USA could prove to be the place to go when trying to get your hands on an E-Type. It’s believed classicandsportscar.com found a Series 1 for sale in Manhattan described as ‘complete and intact’ for a total of around £14,000. It may need a lot of work, but it’s yours for a reasonable price!
Today the legacy of the car is still going strong and a rare 1967 Series One 4.2 Litre model left the Browns Lane factory to join one of the other 100 fine classic cars auctioned at Historics on the 1st of June. It was sold for £112,000.
After a two-year nut and bolt restoration, the car is in fact expected to be better today than when it was built. Attention to detail has been the highest order, with the new owner expected to enjoy at least a 12-month warranty after purchase with mileage that’s below 50,000.
So there we have it, a classic icon that truly is living evidence for why jaguars are, and will remain, one of the supreme cats of the automotive jungle as we know it, the E-Type was a revolution when it was first launched and Jaguar have found it near impossible to replicate- making it one of the most sought-after classics in the world.
