Most of us have heard about the famous tale of Phileas Fogg circumnavigating the world in 80 days in order to win a large wager amongst his peers. But how many have heard about a world tour involving an 80 year old classic car? (Actually 84 years, but we thought this would spoil the story title!)
Well we can tell you it’s not fiction when we say that Heidi Hetzer, a Berlin born German Celebrity has started the challenge, first completed by Clärenore Stinnes in an Adler Standard 6.
Hetzer is a seasoned driver, the 76 year old former automobile dealer, rally car driver, classic car collector and popular celebrity in Berlin certainly isn’t new to the automotive world and looks to complete the task in style in a classic eight-cylinder 1930 Hudson ‘Great 8’.
Years of experience Hetzer took over her father’s Opel dealership in the 1960s and made it into one of the largest in Berlin. In between fixing and selling cars, Hetzer also raced them and collected more than 150 trophies from her career spanning over 50 years.
The proposed travel route started at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin earlier in July, and looks to go through Eastern Europe, Turkey, Russia and China later in the year.
She will then head into South East Asia before arriving in Perth, New Zealand and then transport to California before heading south in 2015 to tackle the South American stages before reaching Europe again. Yes it is that simple…
Perhaps not your most conventional adventurer, Hetzer has really set a remarkable goal for herself in the classic car. Her planned 2 year trip got underway July this year. We wish the best of luck to her and her accompanying mechanic, we are sure they are going to need it!
